Marigold Flowers-गेंदे के फूल-Calendula Officinalis

Ayurvedic Properties of Marigold Flowers-गेंदे के फूल-Calendula Officinalis (V+P-K-): Ayurvedically, it is Bitter & Astringent in Taste. It is Light & Dry in Nature. It predominantly pacifies Pitta, then Kapha & may vitiate Vata in excess. Its Potency (Virya) is Cooling & Post Digestive Effect (Vipaka) is Katu (Signifies that it transforms to Pungent taste after Digestion). Marigold Flowers have large number of species credited to them and are easily found all over India.

Bio-Chemically: The Flowers, Leaves & Seeds are rich in Essential Oils, Flavonoids, Phytosterols, Beta-Carotene (Helps manufacture of Vitamin-A), Many Vitamins (A, B1, C, D…), Rich in Lipophilic Substances (Oils & Lipids that support Lipid Layer/s of Skin-and hence I have advised the leaves paste for skin related issues!), Natural Anti-Oxidants-Carotenoids (May be used to alleviate Oxidative Stress related to consumption of Hydrogen Peroxide), Other Active Metabolites such as Polysaccharides, Salicylic Acid, Essential Acids, Sesquiterpens, Saponins, Tannins and much more…

Medicinally: The Whole Plant (Flower-Seeds-Leaves) has many useful Medical uses which would not be feasible to put down here but few of them (Mostly uses of Flowers) would be:

  1. Anti-Microbial, Immune-Metabolic System Stimulant:
  • The Plant specifically Flowers are Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Fungal, Anti-Inflammatory & Anti-Oxidant Properties,
  • Fevers: Infusion from Fresh Flowers.
  • Wound-Swelling-Inflammation: Apply paste of Crushed Flower, Leaves or Juice of all Plant Parts (Root, Stem, Leaves, Seeds, Flower) on affected areas,
  • Bleeding Haemorrhoids: Mix crushed leaves of few Marigold Flowers with 2-3 Tsp. A2-Desi Cow Ghee, mild cook it for few seconds & drink it Twice-Thrice a day and/or Grind 2-3 Raw Black Pepper Balls with 12-15 Marigold leaves and drink with a cup of lukewarm water and/or Simply have a Tsp. of Leaves Juice 2-3 Times a Day and/or Apply Flowers-Seeds-Leaves Paste on Inflamed Pile Mass,
  1. Digestive-Abdominal System-Gastrointestinal Disorders (Indigestion, Peptic-Other Ulcers…),
  2. Circulatory System: Helps in Blood Coagulation, prevents excess bleeding,
  3. Respiratory System-Oral Cavity-Ear-Eye Health:
  • Cough & Cold, Bronchitis, Asthma: Have ½ a Tsp. of Marigold Seeds & a Tsp. of Rock candy with a cup of warm water 2-3 times a day,
  • Ear Ache-Sore Eyes: Put some Marigold Leaves Juice on hot spoon, put 2 drops to each ear,
  • Eye Ache: Apply leaves paste on eye lashes,
  1. Skin-Hair Issues-Health:
  • Acne, Dermatitis, Pus Cells, Boils, Itching-Viral Infections: Apply Flower-Plant Juice 2-3 Times a Day; a highly effective (Yuck!) alternative would be to add equal amount of Gaudhan-Ark and apply on affected areas…,
  • Prevents premature ageing of Skin-Skin Wrinkles. Marigold Flowers are Natural Moisturiser & Stimulates Sebaceous Glands,
  • Useful for Alopecia (Hair Loss-Baldness) & helps in Hair Growth,
  1. Excretory-Reproductive System Disorders-Liver-Kidney Stimulant (Blood in Urine, Menstrual related disorders, Uterine Bleeding, Hepatoprotective & Stimulates Bile Juice Production)…

Non-Medicinal uses of Marigold Flowers-गेंदे के फूल-Calendula Officinalis:

  1. Decorative Purposes,
  2. Extraction of yellow Dye from Flowers,
  3. Pigment/s extracted to be used as Food Colouring Agents…

How may we consume Marigold Flowers-गेंदे के फूल-Calendula Officinalis:

  1. Flower Paste,
  2. Flower petals may be sprinkled on Salads,
  3. Flowers-Leaves Decoction,
  4. Leaves Decoction: Add few Leaves to a cup of water, Simmer-Boil till water remains half,
  5. Marigold Leaves Juice: Steep-Soak few Marigold Leaves in water for few hours, strain out the Leaves, Crush them to form a paste, Stir-mix It back with the water, Juice is ready to be relished (Add Jaggery or Honey to taste-as appropriate),
  6. Simply Cold Pressed Leaves Paste or juice may be used externally or internally,
  7. Infusion of Flowers-Seeds-Leaves,
  8. Marigold Oil: Put 1-3 tablespoons of Marigold Flower Petals in a Glass jar; Put-Add 1-3 Litres of Coconut Oil-Carrier oil; Let the mixture infuse for about 4 Weeks (In open light-away from direct sunlight); Strain the Petals and the resulting oil is usable for Upto a year. The ‘Hot Infusion’ method may also be used where mixture of flower petals & carrier oil/s are put on slow heat in an open utensil, for few hours, cooled, strained and stored…
